Millions of workers, in nearly every field, will at some time or another suffer from job stress. The effects of job stress can greatly impact your ability to sleep and negatively effect your over all health in a variety of ways. It is important for you to know what job stress is and how it effects your ability to sleep as well as your over all health so that you can identify the early warning signs and take steps to combat job stress before it begins to interfere with your well being.
Job stress can have many sources, the most common of which is simply being over worked. With the constant obsession with doing more and getting more material goods people are pushing themselves to work longer hours and to devote more days per week to the job instead of taking time off for themselves and their families. The result is an onslaught of both physical and mental stress since the human body simply can not continue to function at long periods of time without a break, it begins to break down when you constantly work later and later hours, skip your vacations and work weekends.
Even when you enjoy what you are doing, your body needs a resting period and both your physical and mental well being will suffer if you overwork yourself to the point that even when you do quit work, the job stress interferes with your ability to sleep so your body never gets to reset itself.
Job stress can also come from other sources including conflicts that you may experience with your boss or with other co-workers that can make your working hours very stressful and unpleasant. Whether this conflict is serious harassment or simply a severe case of clashing personalities constant tension in the work environment can create a lot of job stress.
Being in a job or a career field that is not right for you is also another large contributor to job stress. And unlike the job stress that results from conflicts at work or being over worked, the job stress that comes from simply being in the wrong job often becomes more stressful because the cause of the job stress itself is often unrecognized. If you are not a people person and you are in a position where you are forced to constantly interact with the public or if you are the type of person that thrives on change and new challenges but you are stuck performing repetitive, mundane tasks you will eventually begin to experience job stress because you are in an environment that is contrary to your nature.
Prolonged exposure to job stress can lead to sleeplessness, irritability, digestive problems, high blood pressure, heart disease, and a variety of other help problems. But there are some things that you can do to combat job stress. Take time off for yourself and your family, rest and relax. If you find it hard to unwind trying a hot shower, practicing meditation, or using aromatherapy such as the lavender sleeping mists that you can use to lightly spray your bed sheets might help. The lavender will help you to relax and sooth you off to sleep.
Do not be afraid to seek remedies to conflicts or to embark on a new career if your current one is not putting you in a position to best utilize your own traits and talents. Whatever you choose to do, becoming aware of the job stress and developing a proactive plan for battling it will help you to over come job stress, get the rest that you need, and protect your health.
