Anxiety disorder is a common stress-related condition that’s associated with feelings of nervousness, tension and panic. It also has physical symptoms. The physical symptoms of anxiety are sometimes mistaken for other ailments.

Like other mental disorders, anxiety is psychosomatic. This means that the body reacts to the mind’s condition. We now know that the body and mind are closely linked. If you can recognize the physical symptoms of anxiety, you can treat it before it becomes a major problem.

  • Rapid heartbeat – This is almost always a symptom of anxiety disorder. You experience a rapid heartbeat any time you are excited or nervous, but a constant speeding heartbeat for no known reason could be a sign of anxiety.
  • Breathing – You may experience shortness of breath. It is a feeling almost like hyperventilating, but not quite as strong. Some anxiety sufferers feel that they are choking, and have trouble catching their breath.
  • Excessive sweating and shaking – Do you ever find yourself sweating when you don’t feel cold? This could be a sign that your body is reacting to something in your mind.
  • Dry throat – Like any kind of nervous feeling, anxiety is often accompanied by a dry throat. You may also have difficulty swallowing.
  • Chest pain – One serious symptom of anxiety is chest pain. You may feel a tightness in the chest, or an acute pain like someone is stabbing you. You’re not having a heart attack, but your heart is suffering under the strain.
  • Stomach pain – Stomach pain can be a sign of anxiety. These pains come in a variety of feelings, from a dull pain to a sharp pain like heartburn. The stomach is often the organ that suffers most under stress. This pain can also be accompanied by nausea, vomiting or diarrhea.
  • Other symptoms include headaches, dizziness or faintness. One problem that is unique to anxiety is soreness of the jaw. This is from excessive clenching of the jaw, especially during sleep.

Deep Breathing For Anxiety Relief

What can you do about these ailments? The best thing is to slow everything down. A great way to achieve a relaxed state quickly is through deep breathing.

Sit in a relaxed position and begin to breathe slowly and naturally. With each breath in, draw in calmness. With each breath out, exhale tension. With practice, you can do this simple exercise anywhere. It’s a great way to take a break and slow things down.

Anxiety is a common problem among everyday people. The little stresses of the world can get to you. Learn to tell when you need a break, and then slow things down and get calm again.
